Food is what our body uses as fuel to function and complete our everyday tasks. Food must also be comforting and appetizing since it’s where we get the nutrients and energy we need for our daily activities. As humans, we are inherently food enthusiasts. However, there are a lot of food items around the world that you may find extremely weird. Here are a few of them:
A fertilized duck egg with the chick partially developed inside is a very popular snack item in the Philippines.
Literally meaning “sleeping excrement”, this type of fungus turns corn into what most people will throw out in the garbage. Corn smut is actually a special dish served in Mexico.
This rather NSFW looking clam can weigh up to 1.5kg in the wild and is pretty popular in Japan, served as sashimi or in a stew.
White Ant Eggs Soup
Gaeng Kai Mot Daeng or White Ant Eggs Soup is a delicacy from Laos. It’s a combination of white ant eggs, larva, and partial embryos that give out a taste somewhat similar to shrimp.
Another popular food item in Japan is Shirako which is described to be buttery, sweet, and soft. Shirako or milt, in English, is actually the seminal fluid of fish. This can be served fried, like a stew, or eaten raw with any seasoning of your choice.
Originating in England, this weird food is believed to be created by a 16th-century sailor who caught fish amidst storms and huge waves to feed the starving residents of his village. There are other combinations of this pie today such as lobster, rabbit, and crayfish.
